Voluspa Scented Candles

You know by now that I am nothing without a scented candle. They are literally essential to my existence. I have said before that Voluspa Candles are the creme de la creme of scented candles and I will say it again.

Their fragrances burn true and very cleanly, and here is why...they use a Coconut Wax blend. "Voluspa is one of the first candle companies to use coconut wax commercially. Coconut wax is made by first
collecting coconuts and then cold pressing the oil out of the meat of the coconut. That coconut oil is then turned in to coconut wax through the process of hydrogenation which is the same process by which soy wax is made"-via Voluspa. This means that they are clean burning, keep their crisp white look, hold their scent beautifully and prominently, and they are ecologically sound and sustainable. The holy grail!

I have bought all of my Voluspa candles for the past few years from a fantastic online store, Amara. They have tonnes of design led pieces for the home, and a great range of candles too. I bought a Fatboy pouffe for my new flat a couple of weeks ago by virtue of their great marketing of new brands on their website, and I am hooked. Rather predictably I went for the pink one, but was tempted by the camo option.

Anyway, Voluspa has upped their game producing bigger and better candles that deliver on all fronts. Here are my current faves.

Check me out...Miss October! This was the image for the month of October in The Bread Book: A Baker's Almanac, by Ellen Foscue Johnson. Back in the day...(over used phrase I know Pops!), my brother and I were very willing kiddy labour for a family friend's bread book illustration.

Mutt tells the tale that she was preggers with my younger brother Al, and they took a shot of her holding this bowl of dough, then one of her with a baguette and baby in her arms. Must dig out those pics. Bun.In.The.Oven...literally. I had a whole wardrobe of those smocked dresses and James? Well, he was permanently in sweat suits, Izods, towelling wristbands, green flash sneakers...leisure-wear! This was shot on the front porch of our house in Weston,VT. Man, still so many memories of that magical place.

OK, I have to take a big breath....I have finally hunted down my long lasting obsession on The Bay...Vintage Franshaw State Hankies! I haven't seriously sought after these on a full time basis and frequently forget that I want to own some, but since I have lots of blank walls to fill in my new flat I decided to commit myself to finding souvenir handkerchiefs from States I love.

You see, I am all about framing fabric these days and I have to admit that I got this particular idea from the set design from the movie Julie and Julia...I can't wait to show you the results.
(Psst...I am still bidding on a couple more, for a New England set..fingers crossed).

Apothecary Fox is back!!

I am really not sure how to start off this post..you see things have taken a major turn for me and my life and this little blog has born the brunt of it. If you follow Apothecary Fox you will know that I left the UK about 18 months ago in search of a different life. One less driven by the day to day burdens and stresses of a very fast paced and pretty stressful life in the hospitality industry, and more focused on exploring my love of the handmade life.
Wellllllll.....I made a U-turn. It wasn't that I didn't love my new found life of handmade loveliness or that of the peaceful Vermont life. It was more that I realised I wasn't ready to let go of my career in restaurants and that an opportunity to take on an exciting project came my way. I literally couldn't resist, but it did take about 6 months of back and forth chat with my old bosses to convince me that I was making the right decision. So, I am back in the UK (Glasgow to be precise) and have spent the past 3 months opening a monster of a restaurant. Here is the story in pictures...

I have always been up for a challenge and this one was too good to resist. The biggest opening my company has done in over a decade, and a new and exciting city to explore! What is not to love about all of that? Browns Glasgow has made quite a splash and we have been open less than two months. Read some of the amazing reviews to get a sense of what we have all achieved with a whole heap of hard work! The Daily Record, The Herald, The Glasgow Evening Times, Bite Magazine, Dram Magazine and more to come I hope!

Anyway, I am sure you can appreciate the time and effort it has taken to make this transition but I pledge to you all that normal service will resume shortly. I realised that I just could not shake my love of this crazy world of restaurants and bars and wasn't ready to slow down. My heart belongs to Browns. I might well have known that all along. But....I am passionate about all the gorgeous design-led beauties I see around me everyday so that will always be high on my list of extra curricular activities. This blog will just have to be the way I indulge my love of the handmade for a few more years to come.

I can't express my gratitude to you all enough, for sticking with me through the months of silence, for your encouragement and design tips, and for your like-minded interests that keep stearing me to new discoveries. Stick with me, and we will continue this beautiful adventure!

A truly satisfying and exciting dining experience can be hard to find, especially in these rural parts, but recently I found one that hits the mark in all the right places, The Downtown Grocery in Ludlow VT. Let me say that the owners are friends, comprising of husband and wife team Rogan and Abby Lechthaler and assisted by Alyssa Prouty. Rogan is the Chef Owner and Alyssa his Sous, both previously of the fine dining restaurant Verdé, at Stratton Mountain. Abby also worked there, delivering her own dynamic enthusiasm and Southern charm to the front of house, as she does at TDG.

Let me also say I have made my career in restaurants and they are my passion, but when you work in them you look for all manner of tiny things that can naturally turn you off. Hard sell. Suffice it to say, I take my work home with me and am not swung by personal ties when assessing any dining experience I have. TDG promises to deliver pretty much everything that I want in a dining experience. Wonderful warm and bustling atmosphere with perfectly dimmed lighting, plenty of gorgeous decorative detail but with restraint and consideration for the overall look, casual individual but informed and friendly service, killer cocktails....oh and the food? The food is divine. Clever, witty, skilled and most of all delicious. The emphasis is on local ingredients and the best of seasonal fare and the kitchen cooks up inventive pairings of flavors making for a truly exciting taste fest.

The menu itself is small but left me completely crippled by indecision about what to order. It all looked so good. The specials boards are stuffed with alternatives that just made the process even harder, only eased by the fact that those dishes sell out in lightening speed and so by the time we forced ourselves to choose some of our decisions were made for us by the 86-ed specials.

To start, a board of house made sausage, pickles, mustard and local cheddar, teamed with an arugala, pancetta and shaved parmesan salad. Then onto a slow cooked pork belly that was the definition of "melt in the mouth".

A special that took our fancy was this house made gnocchi with rabbit that was so light and bright in flavor it took us pleasantly by surprise.

Desserts are a small and perfectly formed list. The late night breakfast (freshly made french toast, buttermilk bacon ice cream, maple syrup) is one that I will have to go back for, but the homemade sorbets (cherry was my fave) were a perfect way to cleanse the palate at the end of the meal.

The interior boasts many details that emphasize the casual and local nature of the restaurant's ethos. Handmade birch light fittings, barn boards used to make blackboard frames, quirky coat hooks made from upcycled forks and the chuckle inducing restaurant signs painted by Alyssa's sister Lucy (they are in fact local Vermont birds).

The Downtown Grocery is relatively new to the scene and is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the craft by this trio, and it shows. So why not reward them at the end of your meal by more than just the tip?

By them a round of tall boys (Narragansett is the current beer du jour) and they'll thank you for it. This business is a thirsty job!

Royal Wedding

I think I can get pretty into the whole craziness that is starting to build around the wedding of Wills and Kate, particularly if the commemorative items are like this Corgi Royal Wedding Tea Towel by Gemma Correll. Commissioned by ToDryFor, this design is a limited edition piece that is just so perfectly witty and that little bit off beat. Not the usual china cups and saucers with an official picture of the happy couple, instead a tea towel to dry them with.

I am beginning to have a thing about Corgis as I dog sit for a very sweet little gal of the Corgi persuasion. As puppies they are literally THE cutest thing you can imagine!

Morsels from Miami

Sorry for the silence peeps, but I had to pop down to Miami for a few days to hang out with my brother. Tough life. The youngest of our clan is a supervisor at the RUMBAR, Ritz Carlton on Key Biscayne. Swank. Since we hadn't ventured down south to see how he lives his life it seemed like the perfect time to get in some sun since we have been dumped on with snow for the past month or so. It turns out that even Miami can be cold and wet, who knew? Anyway, we had a blast and I really had no expectations so it made the trip even better. Here's a taster of the sights we took in while we were there.

Mr Yum, Calle Ocho Little Havana, serves up Thai/Japanese food with with a contemporary edge.

This food was inventive, delicious and insanely beautiful. Romi Roll (left) consisted of Tuna, Salmon and White Fish topped with Wahoo, Tempura Flakes, Spicy mayo and Eel Sauce and Dominic Roll (right) of Spicy Tuna, Green Apple topped with Fresh Tuna and Cilantro.

Next we tried out the Mojitos at the RUMBAR. With 52 rums on offer it is a crime not to try a sampling of some of the rarer ones, but the Black and Blue Mojito (classic Mojito with the addition of blueberries and raspberries muddled in) was a particular treat.

They manage to conjure up the look and feel of Old Havana with rich colors, low lighting, aged leather furniture and mahogany ceiling fans. The details are just right, and the staff are wonderfully attentive and knowledgeable, naturally.

Hands down the best dining experience we had was at Joe's Stone Crab on South Beach. This is an institution in Miami, serving up stone crabs with old school flair for the past 98 years. The place is a machine, serving around 1200+ (at a guess) guests an evening with an array of fish, steaks and the obligatory crab claws. The food is simple and delicious. Wear a bib....that's all I am saying.

Interesting info on how they harvest the crab claws here. "In order to assure the continued survival of the species, only one claw can be removed so the crab can defend itself. Egg bearing females are not allowed to be declawed. the crabs are captured in baited traps. No spears or hooks are allowed. Four inches from the first joint to the tip is the minimum legal size, that's about two ounces. A colossal can weigh 25 ounces or more" via Joe's. We love sustainable fishing.

And last but not least, we went to the Everglades to hunt down alligators. Well, not hunt exactly but hop on an airboat and zoom around the marshes in the hope of seeing at least one of these pesky beasts. Bingo! We saw a total of 3 even though it was decidedly cold and rainy.

Our guide, Captain Debbie was knowledgeable and entertaining but definitely a no nonsense gal. We chose the Sawgrass Recreation Park for our little slice of Floridean wildlife.

So, it was a blast and I was left feeling like I couldn't wait to go back. Next time I am hitting the shops on South Beach!

Year of the Rabbit

So we all know by now that we are in the year of the Rabbit (beginning on 3rd February 2011) according to the Chinese astrological chart. In the West we consider the rabbit to be lucky (or atleast the foot), but overall this sign stands for calm, compassion, family and strength so this year should be a goody! Maine designer Angela Adams' new range of hand woven New Zealand wool rugs features this gorgeous Foxy design of organic geometric shapes that takes its inspiration from the tunnels and dens made by the wonderfully perky Red Fox that we love.

Nutritional Therapy: Grape

There is one thing that I find annoying about the UK v USA, and that is that all purple coloured candy is blackcurrant flavoured in the UK, instead of the infinitely more delicious grape of the US. I admit this is not a tragedy on the scale of the impossibility of buying Magic Hat in Britain debacle, but it does suck. So with this particular frustration in mind, I am going to get my grape on with a purple tinged selection for you.

I "heart" Necco Sweethearts

Necco (New England Confectionary Company) began its life in 1847, with Olive R Chase's invention of the lozenge cutter candy machine. Fascinating history of the company here. This is a Boston company arguably most well known for the Necco Wafer, but since Valentine's Day is round the corner I thought that a look at the company's Sweethearts (Conversation Hearts) was in order. These are the world's number one selling non chocolate Valentine's candy. Impressive!

I am willing to bet that we all passed a Sweetheart to someone in our youth, leaving it up to the candy to deliver the message we couldn't find the words for ourselves. They began life in 1866 and Necco has updated their Sweetheart Conversation Heart range continually, adding modern sayings to the mix over time. In 2010 they went back to the drawing board and asked the American public to redesign the sayings, resulting in a new generation of heart candies...."Tweet Me" anyone? LOL!

Not so wily Coyote

Imagine my surprise when I stepped out this afternoon and saw a coyote sauntering around our yard! Even more amazing was that it wandered up into our field and snuggled up in the horses' hay. Can you spot him?

Once the horses came over to have a chat, he decided to move on.

A while back I trapped a fisher cat (notoriously hard to do as these critters are vicious and crafty), which had been eating our chickens so this is just another example of my keenly honed nature skills. Maybe I should become a professional trapper or something, my talents are being wasted...

I have been struck down by the dreaded flu bug and rendered useless by it's evil powers over the past week. But never fear! I am fighting back and will resume normal service today. The single most annoying thing about having any kind of cold is the loss of smell and taste. How dull life becomes when you can't savor some tasty treat or enjoy a scented candle. So, in the absence of my taste buds I am relying on the lovely watercolors of Parisienne Lucile's Kitchen to give me a little sensory therapy.

Snow Day

Another Snow Day came upon us yesterday. 8 inches overall, topped off with freezing rain. Brrrr... Lucky for me I work from home, so no need to tackle the roads on a day like this. Instead, I thought I would go with the snow white theme from an Etsy Treasury I did recently, for a bit of colour therapy.

Spring/Summer 2011 Liberty of London

How do I put this....I love Liberty, I love florals and I love Children's books so I can't help thinking this collection was designed specifically with the Fox in mind. Or, perhaps my loves are not so unique to me....clearly others love the combination too. Liberty has released their Spring/Summer 2011 Tana Lawn fabric designs and there is no shortage of fabulousness amongst them. These newest collections take inspiration from the world of Children's illustration. I think the result is a range of designs that exhibit a wonderful spirit and playful character. Here are my picks....

Delfie, Pep and Tuesday Trees by Lauren Child

Lauren Child is the award-winning illustrator, most recognised for her characters ‘Charlie and Lola’ and ‘Clarice Bean’, who were first introduced in two series of children's books. "Lauren’s fabric designs are a mixture of an original ‘Clarice Bean’ she has created for Liberty, and patterns inspired by Liberty Archive prints she has selected personally. Delfie is based around an archival print with wrought iron swirls, created by Gillian Farr in the early 60s. The result is a beautiful heart-shaped floral check, decorated with classic Liberty print flowers and acorns."- Liberty

Pep takes inspiration from the cherry blossom and the result is a stylised floral pattern and Tuesday Trees cleverly references archival Liberty prints in it's forest pattern.

Plum Dog and Ian Rhodes by Emma Chichester Clark

Emma Chichester Clark was taught by the singularly unique Quentin Blake. "She has won the ‘Mother Goose’ award for her children’s book illustrations. This series of designs was inspired by her book ‘Eliza and the Moonchild’. Created for Liberty, ‘Plum Dog’ is an original print featuring Emma’s beloved dog Plum. Ian Rhodes features a hand-painted used watercolour box, evoking Eliza’s need to paint everything she sees in the ‘Moonchild’ story. "-Liberty

Olivia Strange and Reuben Kelly by David McKee

David McKee is an award-winning illustrator and the creator of the legendary Mr Benn stories, a character that was turned into a British children’s television programme in the 70s depicting the bowler hatted Benn having magical adventures sparked by visits to a costume shop. "The illustration created for this collection was hand painted by David, and designs were based around an image of Mr Benn about to embark on an adventure as a Liberty Print Knight. Inspired by the swirls on a shop keeper’s jacket, Olivia Strange features a ribbon shop of ribbons. Rueben Kelly shows Maypole ribbons cascading down the fabric, a design inspired by a shopkeeper’s stripy trousers. "

You know I love ribbons so I have to say that Olivia Strange is my absolute favourite, but there is so much variety in this collection that there is a pattern for everyone to fall in love with this season. See for yourself here.

Foxy Finds Friday

This Woodland Fox felt yarn wreath by Knock Knocking, caught my eye instantly while window shopping around Etsy. This wreath has the perfect compliment of colours and uses an array of different materials (wool, moss, tweed, felt) that give a wonderful woodland feel to the piece. And of course you can't miss that cute fox nestled in the center.

Spring has sprung at Boden

The British clothier Boden, has released its new Spring collection. Packed full of floral designs and beautiful bright colours, this collection is a delightfully warm breeze in this wintery climate. Boden's signature style is defined by classic cuts and simplicity of form, with the use of a myriad of colour options and vintage inspired prints to create variety. Feminine but not too girly, which is right up my street. Have a look at some of their new pieces for Spring...

Boden's clothing and accessories are timeless, well made, and therefore good value (mid priced) and the fit is true to real size. Think J.Crew with a little more of an English Rose styling (twin sets? Tea dresses? Ballet flats? Tweed jackets? yup, all of that and more), and less of the trend driven direction. You know by now that I am obsessed with stylish duds for wee ones. I have a reputation to uphold for providing the wee foxes (my nephews and nieces) with unique clothing and am always on the look out for lovely pieces. Since it has been at least a year since I stepped foot in a Zara, I am reduced to checking their online inventory and their children's range just gets better and better. They are literally miniature versions of the kind of thing the most stylish yet penny conscious adult would wear. Great value although I am not especially convinced of the quality. Ah well, I figure they grow so fast anyway the stuff won't fall apart for the time they fit into it.

You probably have your 2011 Calendar already, but I am notoriously late in getting mine, plus they get cheaper at the beginning of the year (**update, this calendar is now on sale! No excuse for me now..**). Bargain!! If truth be told I tend to forget to flip over my months and generally leave most of a paper calendar blank (the curse of the smart phone/iCalendar?). I want to change this, and the Cabin and Cub Desk Calendar by Cabin fits the bill.

Design Therapy: Donna Wilson

The delightfully quirky and playful work of Donna Wilson is getting major attention this year, and I am not at all surprised. Her work consists principally of knitted pieces and ceramics, showcasing Donna's furry friends and other characters in graphic and colorful designs. It is inspiring to see an artist make a such a success of themselves and do it with such unique charm. A recent Guardian newspaper article tells us that "as with other success stories, it's part luck, talent and timing. Wilson, who grew up on a farm in the Scottish countryside, is purveyor of a kind of naive craftwork — all Nordic patterns, cosy knits and owls. Her products, including blankets, ceramics, scarves, gloves, hats and, from January, rugs, are warm, comforting and nostalgic, perfect for a Britain gripped by swingeing cuts."

The facts are that Ms Wilson established her company in 2003 after making "odd knitted creatures" for her degree show while studying at the Royal College of Art. After a sell out, Donna has built her brand through creating a collection of blankets, cushions, plush creatures and more. With a studio and production in London, Donna hails originally from Scotland and has some of her pieces manufactured in Galashiels, and other pieces are UK made where feasible. Donna was awarded the coveted Designer of the Year title, by the British Design Awards 2010 and this is what they had to say about her, "There’s no-one quite like textiles queen Donna Wilson. Simply...Splendid Littles

I discovered Splendid Littles as I was browsing through all those email updates that come flooding in from online stores. They have a collection for Target which is simple and sweet and I thought I would see what their children's clothing main line is like. Well, they had me at cotton solids and STRIPES. I don't know what it is about stripes on children but I just love that look, simplicity with just the right amount of interest in contrasting colors. The capsule wardrobe for your little ones. Perfect.

Do you believe in Angels?

What started out as a random and cute stocking stuffer, has sparked my intrigue further. Have you ever heard of Sonny Angel? They are tiny doll figurines with the motto "He May Bring The Happiness To You!?". Basically, these insanely cute little plastic figurines are based on the Kewpie Doll in overall design (with the slightly odd addition of genitals....I am choosing to ignore that fact due to the redeemingly cute angel wings). This instantly recognisable image is embellished with some form of head gear ranging from heads/hats imitating animals, fruits, vegatables, crowns and other themes. The kicker is that each boxed doll in the relevant edition is completely random and unknown in it's detail. Will you get a kiwi or pineapple, a lion or a hippo? A lucky dip if you will. OK, it is way too hard to describe and I have had no luck getting much background on these little critters (of Thai, or atleast Asian origin), so have a look for yourself.

I know, cute right? I don't want to give myself too much of a reputation for being a woman of a certain age who likes dolls, but I truly can't resist the cuteness of these little guys. Bargain Basket Beauties

Naturally, as soon as Christmas is over (in fact often starting before the big day) the sales serve to torture you with all those things you have had on your wish list, now slashed to 75% off. Or worse, the pricey items you might have bought for your loved ones, now at a fraction of the price. So cruel! I routinely browse around my favourite online stores, adding things to my shopping cart that I particularly love. Rarely do I actually buy any of this stuff that sits suspended in my basket, but still it gives me a little thrill. Guilt free shopping. Except when those things I have had my eye on drop so dramatically in price that I am wracked with anxiety about missing out on the bargain of the year! Christmas is a time for indulgence in my book. Somehow I can justify that from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day anything goes. Bloody Mary's at 11am, oysters for afternoon snack, cookies pretty much anytime, turkey, ham, cheese and crackers, candy canes....you get the picture. Anyway, I am secure in the knowledge that I am not alone. If you, like me, are feeling the need to lighten the load then surely this is a good way to start...Kusmi Tea. Pretty package and healthy contents, perfect.

Project 9: Wreath Decorating

I know it is a little late in the day to start talking about decorating wreaths but the truth is that we bought our wreath some time ago and had committed to decorating it ourselves. Naturally, our good intentions fell slightly by the wayside so it was only today that I managed to deck it out. Probably best to file this post under "For future reference"....

We bought our wreaths (and tree) at the DeCell's Christmas Tree Farm in Weston, Vermont. Since we were mesmerized in by the immense beauty and scale of the 4 foot wreath which is now mounted on the side of our barn, the wreath for the main door had to be downsized. We bought a 14 inch undecorated wreath and I pledged to gussy it up.

So what to do with a bare wreath? Why tie a bow on it of course! At Glebe Mountain Gardens in Londonderry, Vermont the staff will gladly demonstrate how to create the perfect bow for your wreath and if you ask nicely you can make one alongside them and get a professional helping hand in the end result. They have a fabulous selection of ribbon for you to purchase and then you can take pride in the fact that you added the crowning glory to your wreath. The Cowles family who own it are friends of ours and they have a huge assortment of wreaths, trees and other greenery for the festive season.
I think the key to tying your own wreath bow is to choose a wired ribbon with color and pattern (I chose a buffalo check flannel ribbon) to draw attention away from the amateur flaws, but I think I can be justifiably proud of my efforts.

You know I am a sucker for candles and packaging, so when I saw the new branding design for Muse Perfumery on The Dieline I was smitten.

The packaging of these handmade and all natural candles features a letterpress label and wood based packaging, each scent is represented through the color of the label and the delightful vintagey pattern of leaves and flowers on the box.

Grain Store Goodness

The Saturday before Christmas brings with it a unique lunch date that is simply not to be missed....meatballs at Erskine's Grain Store (R.B. Erskine Inc Grain Store to be precise) in Chester, Vermont. Want to know where to find it? Why, Grain Store Road of course! This is the place we get our feed for the chickens and horses and invariably I am the one dispatched to place the order for 150lb of Cracked Corn, 150lb of Layer Pellets and 150lb of Sweet Feed. Naturally the unfailingly lovely gentlemen at Erskine's take pity on me and chivalrously load the car up for me every time.

I realised I was becoming a regular the day that our account papers were sitting out on the desk waiting for me as I walked through the door. They still use a very simple system of paper chits (the filing system above) and it works for them....none of that new fangled computer stuff. Keep it simple! Anyway, back to the meatballs....nestled in among the rows of shovels, mason jars, potting soil and barbed wire are a number of crockpots gently care-taking an array of meat based dishes.

On offer today were Swedish meatballs, meatballs in an Italian-type tomato sauce, chilli made with venison (from Pete Carson, a regular customer, see label on pot below) and bread to mop up the delicious juices. Oh, and a little token "salad" which was basically a crudite platter that rightly got passed over. No need for vegetables in this spread! The owner Mike and his staff made up the meatballs (over 500) the day before from the best meat around, bought from the locally famous Lisai's Market just over the railroad tracks, literally. This day is a thank you to their customers and Erskine's goes all out.

Meatball day is quite the institution around these parts and we have Art Putnam to thank for that. "Put" was a long term employee at Erskine's and is credited with starting the meatball tradition in 1980 (this picture is hung above the coffee station, beside the meatballs so that Put can still take part).

Alongside this meat feast is the addition of some musical accompaniment provided by John Specker (also to be seen at the Peru Fair, among many other local and national events). John plays floor stomping fiddle music that fits perfectly in this setting. He is simply a legend around here.

So there you have it, a taste (literally) of some festive fair from Vermont. Mark your calendars, the Saturday before Christmas every year. Come and hang out for a while, everyone is welcome and the hospitality is second to none. It is Vermont after all...

Project 8: Tote Bag

I have been dying to post about my latest handmade adventure, but since I am making everything I give as gifts this year I didn't want to spoil the surprise. However, the first handmade tote I created for the festive season was gifted today for my Step Mother's birthday so I can let you have a look now that she has opened it up.

As an aside, I wanted to commit to a handmade Christmas for lots of reasons (I have the time, the fabric stash and the commitment to handmade) but one thing it is NOT, is cheap! I will have spent more money this year than in many others despite not venturing to the stores for my gifts because of buying patterns, trims, threads, equipment (a rotary cutter, ruler and mat blew my budget straight away). Anyway that is not the point. I want all of my loved ones to have something unique, heartfelt and personal and we all know that is the allure of handmade and I fully support it as a philosophy and industry.

So, a reversible tote bag. I bought a wonderfully inspiring book called One Yard Wonders to get me going. There are so many useful projects and many that even I could do with my limited sewing experience. Plus, the presentation of the book and the accessible instructions (and patterns provided) made this a perfect project for me. The pattern was for a basic tote bag that could be rolled up and stashed for easy storage but I took a little creative license with it and made it reversible with no little tab to roll it up. Let's just say it is my interpretation in the spirit of the design!

What I love about projects like this is the opportunity to use beautiful, bold, colourful, fun fabrics, threads and trims. I want the contrasts and choices of the fabrics to make an impact and this tote was a perfect way for me to showcase these gorgeous choices from Amy Butler (I used her Arabesque and Memento designs from the Love collection).

Not to spoil the surprise for my near and/or dear but I guess the secret is kind of out! Tote bags it is, with each one using a carefully and lovingly chosen selection of fabrics and other little details. Some of you might even get a little extra handmade goodness if I can work out how to do anything other than a tote!! Back to the sewing machine....

I adore bags, you probably know that by now, but I am caught in a "tote bag rut" at the moment just because it is too damn easy to haul all my "essentials" around in a tote and I can throw it in the washing machine when I need to. I actually use L.L.Bean totes as organisers in my car boot to keep everything neat and tidy (again, too many "essential" items stored in my car). Thinking about it, my car has become one huge big silvery tote bag....Aaarrrghhhh.

When I do drag myself out of the tote-phase, it is still about function and practicality but I want something individual, eye catching and usually shiny, but always roomy for all those "essentials".

When I was a wee girl my ultimate dream was to have a play kitchen. My friends and I would spend hours playing "grocery store" from inside the pantry of one of our houses, using an accounting calculator with a paper roll for printing real receipts. I will admit that the one kitchen I wanted more than any was one of those garish plastic ones with lights, cordless telephone and an easy-bake oven but naturally my tastes have moved on (matured?). My appreciation of pretend play is still there although it has gravitated towards the more unique wooden kitchen accessories. There is absolutely no limit to the scale and design of the items available to spark your little ones' imagination these days. If it exists in the real world, there is a toy version of it for sure.

Design Therapy: Crumpled City

I have zero sense of direction. Cannot read a map and have to use my GPS wherever I go. In fact a very good friend of ours is always lamenting the demise of the paper map. If you think about it, maps really are not at all practical in this modern world, and I fail miserably having to navigate the scale of maps, unfolding them, turning them upside down, elbow in face of the driver as I struggle to find our position on page. You know that utter frustration of trying to fold maps back into their perfectly impossibly concertinaed original form.

Luckily, the humble map has had a makeover and been transformed into the very clever Crumpled City Map. I just love this idea, where you are directed to smoosh up the map on purchase and then store it in the accompanied pouch. "How many times have you driven yourself mad trying to fold a map along the original creases? How many times have you been tempted to screw it into a ball and stuff it in your pocket or bag? Here is the map you've always wanted: it is soft, extra-light, beautiful to look at and doesn't mind being ill-treated. It is truly indestructible." Hooray!

Not only is this such a clever and simple idea, but the design concept and execution (courtesy of Emanuele Pizzolorusso) has such clarity and strength. The best ideas are the most simplistic ones, and this is one of those times.

"Before I get to the main event, I just wanted to give my two cents on the topic of savoury as sweet. This seems to be a singularly American tradition that has always baffled me if I am honest. I mean really….parsnip cake, zucchini bread, candy corn (that last one might be stretching my point too far)? I won’t even begin to discuss the confusion caused by dipping a pretzel into chocolate, or …gasp….the pairing of peanut butter and jelly…..ok, ok, please don’t hold that against me. I will concede that tripe, brains, jellied eels, Marmite or pickled eggs are equally as baffling to most non-Brits. Haggis anyone? For the record, I can’t understand sweet with savoury either but I’ll leave that for another day.

I am American by birth (but not heritage) and upbringing until the age of 6, after which we moved to Scotland where I spent my school/college/working years until I moved back to Vermont last year. The duality of my background as an Anglo-American does give me a slightly more objective view of both cultures, and in particular the foods that reflect the identities and traditions of both sides. In addition, food is my career and personal passion so I give it allot of consideration and will try anything. Anyway, I digress…

Pumpkin Pie is in that category of savoury as sweet but is so quintessentially American that you just can’t question it (carrot cake too…I see now that my initial argument is crumbling). I had never baked it before this week and will confess that I was more than a little nervous about tackling this family recipe (my sister-in law’s family). I don’t take cooking disasters well, and I had 8 of these pies to cook for our local Community Dinner (that’s lunch to you and I, it is a Vermont thing). My audience of 60 true Vermonters was adding extra pressure too. A “flatlander” like me couldn’t produce a substandard Pumpkin Pie to finish off their pre-Thanksgiving dinner, it will be the talk of the town for decades!

The following recipe is incredible! The pumpkin filling is mousse-like in consistency and light as a feather. The addition of ginger (and emittance of cloves) gives it a little spiciness and elevates this pie to another level. I am tempted to say this recipe is fool proof. Simple, and completely delicious....I take it all back!

Let me tell you that I am no baker. I generally lack the patience and commitment to follow a recipe, instead preferring to trust my palate and instinct with food. I am also not averse to taking shortcuts. Buy the canned pumpkin pie filling, and a pre-made pie crust. Life is too short.

PUMPKIN PIE RECIPE

3 Egg Yolks

1 Cup Sugar

½ Teaspoon Salt

½ Teaspoon Cinnamon

½ Teaspoon Nutmeg

1 Teaspon Ground Ginger

1 Cup Scalded Milk

2 Tablespoons Melted Butter

1 ½ Cups Pumpkin

3 Egg Whites

½ Cup Crumbled Graham Crackers

9 Inch Pie Crust

Beat egg yolks with the sugar, salt and spices.

Add in pumpkin. Mix together thoroughly.

Combine melted butter and milk in pan on stove. Simmer together briefly. Be careful not to burn the milk! Slowly and gradually, pour hot milk into pumpkin mixture stirring CONSTANTLY. (The idea is for the warm milk to ensure the ingredients blend completely, but not to cook the egg yolks).

Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold egg whites into the pumpkin mixture.

Pour into pie crust. Top with crumbled graham crackers (better if not too finely crumbled, and the more the merrier).

Cook at 350 Fahrenheit for 1 hour. Pie is done when the clean fork/skewer test is passed.

Serve with generous dollop of whipped cream or a slug of pouring cream. As my friend Julia would say, Bon Appetit!"

And there you have it, the most uniquely American dish I could muster for a spot about festive cooking. If you are reading this from outside the US, I really hope that you have a chance to try it out. I promise you will not be disappointed with the result.

Handmade Therapy: Knit one, purl one....

Everyone knows by now that knitting is all the rage. No longer the domain of your granny, this craft is taking over. Stitch 'n Bitch anyone? At primary school in Scotland we had a sewing/craft class for many years, but I don't recall ever completing a knitting project although I did try my hand at it. I preferred the sewing projects, until I drove the needle of the machine clean through my finger....another time.

Anyway, the ladies in my family have all been knitters and both my Grannies were into it. Granny Fox managed to knit full outfits for us all from our own wool provided by a couple of sheep in our back garden in Vermont. I am talking rompers, cardigans, footed leggings, hats, scarves, gloves.....I am allergic. The latest of the clan to resurrect this craft is my mother. Her philosophy is to keep it simple, and create pieces that will have lasting use and a uniqueness to them that just couldn't be bought. Her signature is the baby blanket, and she has created a beautiful piece for each of her 4 grandchildren, most recently for Isobel who arrived less than two weeks ago. I love that they all have a piece of De Oma (her Granny name) to snuggle up with.

I'll let her tell you more...
"I learned to knit at primary school in the north of Scotland (Distant memories of grey woollen socks on different needles -not the easiest thing to start on but we had a stash of sweets in our apron lap bags to keep us going!). I didn't get back into knitting again until the prospective arrival of the first grandchild and thought I would have a go at a patchwork square blanket."

For Oliver, the first born.

"Knitting was becoming fashionable again and I was inspired by my mother-in law who could knit a pair of bootees by tea time and made all the hand knits for our children. Leggings and hooded coats with rabbit ears and bonnets and mittens on a string as well for sleeping outside in the big pram-those were the days!"

F is for FOX, for Noah. Seriously..monogramming? Love it.

"Knitting is a kind of Meditation for me, something centred that I can always pick up and go back to. I knit in soft cashmere or cotton mix as I like the feel of this wool particularly with wooden needles for smaller projects. You can knit on a train (though no longer on a plane), take it with you to fill in the hours wherever you are and the latest pattern is always something to look forward to-a few rows at a time is the rhythm."

A touch of Pink for the first Granddaughter, Honor (the addition of colour was saved until the birth as we didn't yet know what sex she would be).

"I stick to simple garter, stocking and moss stitch but have just mastered cable! Start with something simple (no point in labouring over a complicated cardigan you can buy in Baby Gap). A white silk Lavender sachet with ribbon or cosy hot water bottle cover are both within the grasp of first time knitters.

A simple knitted square pinned to a New Baby card is the equivalent of baking home made cookies wrapped up in a paper bag with ribbon - your time and effort make a gift money cannot buy. Simple knits for Cherished Babies by Erika Knight is a constant inspiration and worth it for the photos alone."

One of the first books my mother bought in recent years on knitting was Debbie Bliss's Baby Knits for Beginners. That was where she got the patchwork pattern for the first blanket (below).

The images are the cutest (don't you just want to eat that baby up?) and the projects seemingly simple. They almost make me feel like picking up the needles again. Although I am inclined to leave it to the experts! Thanks Mutt. x

Sia is a new discovery of mine, but I am late on the pick up. Poppy, dancey, soulful, quirky and joyful is how I would describe this lady's vocals and beats.

You just can't help but be in a better mood after listening to her music. Hailing from Adelaide, Australia, you may recognise her voice from the eternally brilliant Zero 7's tracks such as Destiny from the album Simple Things (2001), where Sia provides the soulful vocals along with Sophie Barker. Listen...

Sia's personal style is awesome. Quirky, bold outfits and accessories that perfectly reflect her playful personality, and the tone of her music.

One Year On....

I left Britain almost exactly a year ago, to move to Vermont. I can hardly believe that a year has gone by and so much has happened in that time, not quite as I had expected but thrilling none the less. My plans to open a boutique here have been axed as I don't see a positive financial outlook in investing in a business here in a time that the economy is tough and businesses are closing rather than opening, for the most part. Anyway, that has given me much food for thought and I am undecided as to my next move but loving the life I have been introduced to here in the most beautiful part of the States, the Green Mountains.

So, I thought I would take a look back at some of the things I was writing about a year ago just in case you missed them the first time around.

Here goes...

DESIGN THERAPY: PlanToys
Perhaps being an Aunt as opposed to a mother, causes me to lean towards the aesthetic in the toys I want to give to the little foxes in the family. Those toys that are unique and do not come with batteries, produce siren noises or have flashing lights! No doubt the wee ones prefer the all singing all dancing versions, but I can only hope they will appreciate the beauty of my choices, and use their imaginations to enhance their playtime. I am not a total purist when it comes to toys. I have a guilty pleasure for Playmobil, my brothers' having their Pirate Ship when we were kids, and me left wishing for their Dolls House.

Bohemia is treasure trove of wonderfully eclectic gifts and clothing, nestled in two spots in Edinburgh's Morningside/Bruntsfield area.

While I was away in Edinburgh, I took the opportunity to browse around some of the gorgeous little boutiques the city has to offer. There is a vibrant independent shopping experience to be had in Scotland's capitol and this week I want to introduce you to some of my favourite boutiques that have made a name for themselves among the throng.

Clementine Home and Gifts is a little gem to be found tucked away in the Bruntsfield area of the city. Here you will find a beautifully curated collection of homeware and gifts that reflect a slightly rustic/"Country Living" feel in the selection on offer. Scottish made items are particularly prominent. I was thrilled to find so many new UK designers I had not discovered before.

Z is for Zipper

Thanks to Mutt for suggesting this one. No longer is the humble zipper just a practical element of clothing. Nowadays, it is a feature all in itself used to embellish all manner of clothing items to give them a little edginess. First created in 1851 and then called the "Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure", the zipper was first named as such by the B.F Goodrich Company when applying it to a pair of their galoshes. Anyway, the history can be found here. I can't say I am a massive fan of its over use as detail, but there are some incredible creations out there that really use the zipper beautifully as detail. I particularly love the asymmetrical styles.

Y is for Yellow

Yellow is the only colour that I know suits me, but that I never ever wear. The one thing I have that is yellow, is a pale yellow ballgown with flowers that I wore to my first formal dance. Sounds awful I know, but it was the prettiest dress I owned (til this day I think) and I fell in love with it when I was 13 for no sane reason and it really worked! I realise it may be more of a summery colour, but I could get into it for Fall.

So if I was going to have a go at yellow, these would be at the top of my list...

X is for X-ray

Hmm...this is a tough one, and unavoidably predictable I fear! But, it proved to be a perfect opportunity to discover the concept of x-ray images from nature that I have been hearing about recently (thanks Claudia!). The stunning thing is that flowers can look incredibly magical and even more beautiful in x-ray, and of course the detail is out of this world.

The work of Judith K. McMillan is an encyclopedia of the inner workings of flowers and plants. The X-Ray is her camera, and unlocks the mystique of the interiors of the plants. More here.

I am particularly drawn to those x-rays that are in colour, giving them a vibrant and more lifelike feel.

The work of Bryan Whitney exemplifies this approach.

The Far Grove 2 has the most beautifully striking images of x-rayed flowers, turned into envelopes.

This is truly a world I had never entered before and I am loving the discovery of such a unique and powerful art form.

W is for Wallpaper

Wallpaper.....I adore the stuff (although have to admit I could never actually put my own up). Generally I particularly love a bold pattern and colour used on an accent wall. It transforms a space so dramatically and there is no shortage of choice out there to fit every taste.

It took me a good 6 months of looking at swatches and shopping around before I found the perfect paper for my bedroom, but the result turned out perfectly. Naturally I wanted pink, and this paper has a rich dusky pink that is bright enough but not over the top (in my book anyway. Black and silver roses give it a touch of the vintage I love. It is a huge wall so most certainly makes an impact.

Velvet says luxury to me. Rich deep colours, the softest most luscious feeling fabric and impossible to clean! Only to be worn for seriously special occasions in my book! U is for Umbrella

OK, so not very inspired but since it has finally decided to rain a bit after weeks of drought then I thought it was fitting! Umbrellas are tricky things, particularly if you are short (like me) and trying to navigate city streets. Inevitably you end up poking people in the head/eye/back and it doesn't make for any kind of enjoyable stroll. However when you are in the country and don't have others to think about, an umbrella provides the perfect canopy of shelter and I love the sound of the rain over head whilst keeping nice and dry.

I have always wanted one of those bubble umbrellas that cover just about half your body and you can see through to aid in the walking-not tripping process. Plus, umbrellas can work as sun shades too so you can get your money's worth in all seasons. Anyway, here are my current faves...

This year is the 250th anniversary of Toile du Jouy, the French fabric design with a complex decorating pattern depicting pastoral scenes. These days you can find many modern variations of this classic design, and if you look carefully they are full of details, references and humour.

Sheila Bridges Harlem Toile, takes an ironic look at some of the stereotypes in African American culture. Her design can be found on wallpaper, fabrics, furniture and diningware.

I should have read the book first, but I can't wait to see this.
